Nutmeg Built a Port: The Spice That Made Penang’s Name

Heritage & Penang Identity Article

Every famous port city has a story about what made it famous – silk, tea, gold. For Penang, the answer is written on the inside of a small golden fruit: nutmeg.

Centuries ago, the spice that Europeans once valued at fortunes grew in the hills around the island. Traders knew Penang not as a tourist stop, but as a place where the world’s most sought-after spice could be found. George Town grew wealthy on the trade, and the island’s name became one that spice merchants said with respect.

One Fruit, Two Spices

Here is the detail most people never notice: the nutmeg fruit gives you two different spices at once. Split it open and you find a lattice of crimson lace hugging a dark seed. That crimson lace is mace. The seed inside is nutmeg. Both come from the same fruit, and both carry that warm, sweet-spicy scent the island became known for.

Penang cooks have used nutmeg for generations – in curries, in pickles, in desserts, and in the sweet nutmeg drinks the island still serves to visitors. It is the rare spice that moves easily between savoury and sweet, and it has a way of lingering in a dish without announcing itself.

Tanjong Sauce®

From the Island’s Spice Cupboard to the Bottle

When the family recipe behind Tanjong Sauce® took shape in 1970, nutmeg was the natural signature. Vinegar, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, ginger powder, nutmeg powder, sugar, and salt – eight ingredients, nothing artificial, and one of them carrying the heritage of the whole island.

The nutmeg in the bottle is Penang nutmeg, ground into powder and blended in small batches in our facility in Simpang Ampat. It gives the sauce its warm, aromatic quality and a gentle peppery bite that sits underneath the chillies – the note people can never quite name, and the reason so many first bites are followed by a second look at the label.

A Port’s Taste, Still in One Fruit

Empires changed, trade routes moved, and the nutmeg orchards are quieter than they once were. But the story did not disappear – it just moved into the kitchen. The same fruit that built a port city still sits on Penang tables today, now doing its quiet work in a bottle.

That is what we mean by a piece of Penang. Not a slogan, but a single fruit with four hundred years of history in every drop.
