Clean Label, Clear Conscience: Why Tanjong Sauce® Keeps It Simple

Brand & Product Article

The Problem with Mass-Market Sauces

Pick up a random bottle of chili sauce from a supermarket shelf and read the ingredient list. You will likely find: water, sugar, chili paste, modified corn starch, monosodium glutamate (MSG), acetic acid, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, artificial colors (often including tartrazine or sunset yellow), thickeners, stabilizers, and hydrolyzed vegetable protein. Fifteen, sixteen, sometimes twenty ingredients before you reach the bottom of the list.

Many of these additions serve industrial purposes: extending shelf life beyond what is natural, creating a thick paste-like consistency that looks substantial, or adding artificial color to compensate for the lack of real chili. None of them contribute to flavor or nutrition.

Eight Ingredients. That Is It.

Tanjong Sauce® takes a different approach. Every 100ml bottle contains exactly eight ingredients:

  • Vinegar – natural acidity and preservation
  • Chili powder – the source of the sauce’s bright orange-red color and gentle heat (approximately 2,000-3,000 SHU)
  • Garlic powder – savory depth
  • Onion powder – sweetness and body
  • Ginger powder – warmth and complexity
  • Nutmeg powder (Myristica fragrans) – the signature differentiator
  • Sugar – balances acidity and heat
  • Salt – enhances all flavors

There is no turmeric for artificial yellow coloring. There is no MSG. There are no thickeners or stabilizers. The sauce’s fluid, smooth consistency comes naturally from its ingredients – not from gums or starches. It pours easily, coats food lightly, and never feels heavy or paste-like.

What MeSTI Certification Means

Tanjong Sauce® carries MeSTI certification from Malaysia’s Ministry of Health. The MeSTI (Makanan Selamat Tanggungjawab Industri) scheme is a food safety assurance program designed specifically for small and medium enterprises. To earn this certification, a producer must demonstrate:

  • Compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP)
  • Documented hygiene and sanitation protocols
  • Traceability of all ingredients from source to finished product
  • Regular internal audits and record-keeping
  • Proper labeling that accurately reflects contents

In short, MeSTI certification means that when Tanjong Sauce® says “eight ingredients,” you can trust that there is nothing else hiding in the bottle. The sauce is also Halal-certified by JAKIM and carries GS1 barcode registration for retail traceability.

24 Months of Quality, Naturally

Despite containing no artificial preservatives, Tanjong Sauce® maintains a 24-month shelf life. This is achieved through the natural preservative properties of vinegar and salt, combined with proper manufacturing hygiene and sealed packaging. The 100ml clear glass bottle with its silver screw cap and gold foil neck wrap protects the contents while showcasing the sauce’s vibrant natural color.

Clean label is not a marketing slogan for Tanjong Sauce®. It is a philosophy. Small-batch production in Simpang Ampat, Penang, ensures that every bottle meets the standards of a family recipe that has been trusted since the 1970s.
