Penang’s Most Treasured Spice: A Love Story 200 Years in the Making

Behind the Brand Article

If there is one spice that belongs to Penang, it is nutmeg. While the tree originated in Indonesia’s Banda Islands, nutmeg found its second home on this Malaysian island centuries ago, and Penang has never let go.

A Spice That Shaped an Island

Nutmeg (buah pala in Malay) was introduced to Penang during the British colonial era. The island’s tropical climate and rich soil proved perfect for cultivation. By the 19th century, Penang was a major exporter of nutmeg and mace, supplying spice markets across Europe and Asia.

Today, you can still visit nutmeg plantations in Balik Pulau, where trees planted generations ago continue to bear fruit. The entire nutmeg fruit is used: the fleshy outer husk becomes juice and pickles, the red mace aril is dried for spice, and the seed itself is the nutmeg we know.

Nutmeg in Malaysian Food Culture

Malaysians use nutmeg in ways that surprise visitors. Nutmeg juice is a popular refreshing drink in Penang. Pickled nutmeg is served as a sour-spicy snack. And in traditional cooking, a pinch of nutmeg powder adds depth to curries, soups, and rice dishes.

Tanjong Sauce®: Nutmeg in a Bottle

Tanjong Sauce® takes Penang’s most famous spice and builds an entire hot sauce around it. While other brands use nutmeg as a background note, Tanjong Sauce® puts it front and centre. The result is a sauce that tastes like Penang: warm, complex, and impossible to forget.

When you try Tanjong Sauce®, you are not just tasting hot sauce. You are tasting centuries of Penang’s spice heritage in every drop.
