The Spice That Was Once Worth More Than Gold
If you have ever bought whole nutmeg, you know it is not cheap. A small jar can cost more than many other spices. So what makes this brown seed so expensive?
1. The Tree Takes Years to Produce
A nutmeg tree takes 7 to 9 years from planting to its first harvest. It does not reach full production until it is about 20 years old. That is a long wait for a return on investment. A single tree can produce up to 2,000 nutmegs per year at its peak, but getting there takes decades.
2. Delicate Harvesting and Processing
Nutmeg harvesting is labour-intensive. The fruit must be picked by hand when it splits open naturally on the tree. Inside, a bright red web called mace wraps around the seed. Workers carefully separate the mace from the seed. Both are then dried slowly, a process that takes weeks. Rushing the drying ruins the flavour.
3. A Volatile History
Nutmeg was once worth more than gold. In the 1600s, the Dutch traded Manhattan to the British in exchange for Run Island, a tiny nutmeg-producing speck in Indonesia. The spice trade shaped empires, and nutmeg was at the centre of it all.
4. Quality Matters
Not all nutmeg is equal. High-quality nutmeg, like the Myristica fragrans grown in Penang, has a higher oil content and stronger aroma. Cheaper, older nutmeg loses its potency. Premium nutmeg commands a premium price.
Why It Is Worth It
