The Dinner Table Challenge: What Happened When 5 Families Switched Their Condiments for a Week
Every Malaysian dinner table has a condiment lineup: chili sauce, ketchup, soy sauce, maybe sambal, maybe that one bottle of imported hot sauce someone bought on impulse. It’s a system that works. But we wondered: what if you replaced all of them with just one bottle?
We asked five families across Malaysia — from Penang to Johor — to do exactly that. For one week, the only condiment on the table was Tanjong Sauce®. No ketchup for the kids’ nuggets. No soy sauce for the stir-fry. No sambal for the nasi lemak. One bottle, every meal, seven days.
The first two days were chaos. The kids, in particular, staged what one mother described as a ‘condiment rebellion.’ A 9-year-old in Ipoh refused to eat her fish fingers without ketchup. A 12-year-old in KL insisted that maggi goreng without soy sauce was ‘not proper maggi goreng.’
By day three, something shifted. The Ipoh family noticed their daughter was actually eating her vegetables — something that previously required bribery. ‘She said she liked the taste,’ her mother told us, audibly confused. ‘She’s never said that about any vegetable before.’
The KL family’s 12-year-old, the self-appointed maggi goreng purist, had a more dramatic conversion. ‘This is better,’ he announced on day four, pointing at his plate. No further elaboration. Just the verdict.
By the end of the week, four of the five families said they weren’t going back to the full condiment lineup. One father in Penang put it best: ‘I didn’t realise how many sauces we had that all tasted basically the same — just different levels of sweet and salty. This one actually tastes like something.’
The biggest surprise? The kids were the first to convert. The nutmeg did something none of the parents expected: it made food taste interesting enough that the children stopped reaching for the ketchup bottle. When a 9-year-old voluntarily eats broccoli because ‘the sauce makes it nice,’ you know something is working.
