The RM10 Pantry Hack: How One Bottle Replaced Five Condiments in My Kitchen

Lifestyle & Positioning Article

Last month, I cleaned out my kitchen. Behind the soy sauce and in front of an expired bottle of sweet chili, I found five different condiments I’d bought over the past year: ketchup (half empty), chili sauce (mysteriously crystallised around the cap), sambal (too spicy for anyone in the house except me), a fancy imported hot sauce (RM28, used twice), and soy sauce (the third bottle, because I kept losing the first two).

Total cost: roughly RM55. Utility: one sauce for nuggets, one for fried rice, one for when guests came over, one for show, and soy sauce for everything else. The system was expensive, cluttered, and honestly — none of them tasted that good on their own.

So I tried an experiment. One bottle. Tanjong Sauce®. RM15.90. Every meal for two weeks.

Here’s what one bottle replaced:

Ketchup — The sweet-tangy profile of Tanjong Sauce® hits the same notes as ketchup on fried foods, but with actual depth. Nuggets, fries, fish fingers — all covered.

Chili sauce — There’s real heat, but it’s rounded by the nutmeg rather than being aggressively one-dimensional. You get the kick without the regret.

Sweet chili sauce — The nutmeg brings a natural sweetness that pairs with the chili, so you get that sweet-heat balance without the sugar syrup texture of commercial sweet chili.

Soy sauce — On fried rice and noodles, the vinegar base adds the savoury punch you’d normally get from soy sauce, plus layers of garlic and spice.

Sambal — The garlic and chili in Tanjong Sauce® give you sambal-like depth without the intensity that scares off everyone who didn’t grow up eating it.

Two weeks later, I’d used half the bottle. RM15.90 for 14 days of meals. That’s RM1.13 per day for flavour that previously took five bottles, RM55, and way too much fridge-door real estate.

The math isn’t complicated. One bottle that actually tastes like something beats five bottles that taste like industrial food science. My fridge door has never looked cleaner — and my fried rice has never tasted better.
