The Ferry, the Lighthouse, and the Bottle: What the Label Actually Means
Look at the label on a bottle of Tanjong Sauce® and you will see more than a logo. There is a lighthouse standing watch, a ferry crossing the water, and a cape pointing out to sea. None of it is decoration. Every element is part of the same story.
Designers will tell you a label should sell the product. This label does something slower: it tells you where the bottle comes from, and why.

The Lighthouse: The Point of Arrival
The lighthouse on the label is Penang’s most famous one – the beacon at the tip of the cape where George Town was founded, guiding ships around the point and into the harbour. For two centuries, that light was the first thing sailors saw of the island.
On the bottle, it means the same thing it meant at sea: you have arrived. This is the place. The sauce inside is made in Penang, from a recipe that belongs to this island.

The Ferry: The Crossing
The ferry is Penang’s oldest connection – the boats that have carried people between the island and the mainland since the late 1800s. It is how workers got to the port, how families visited, how the island’s food and ideas spread across the water and back.
On the label, the ferry carries the brand’s quiet promise: Tanjong Sauce® is a Penang product built to travel. Made on the island, meant for tables everywhere else. A piece of Penang in every drop, making the crossing in a 100ml glass bottle.
The Cape: The Name
Tanjong itself is the cape – the old Malay name for the point of land, in use before the British ever landed. The name roots the sauce in geography, not marketing. A cape is where land meets sea, where arrivals happen, where the world comes in.
That is the whole label in one line: a spice that arrived by sea, a recipe kept by a family since 1970, and a bottle that carries both out into the world.

Why the Bottle Matters
Glass, not plastic. A pour, not a squeeze. A label you read, not one you scroll past. Every choice says the same thing: this is a product meant to be kept on the table, finished slowly, and replaced when it runs out.
Next time the bottle is in your hand, look at the lighthouse, the ferry, and the cape. That is not branding. That is a map – and three drops is all it takes to follow it home.
