Read the Label, Not the Marketing: What ‘Clean Ingredients’ Actually Means in 2026
Pick up any bottle of sauce at the supermarket and you’ll see it: ‘natural,’ ‘clean,’ ‘no artificial flavours.’ These words sell. The problem is, most of them don’t mean what you think they mean.
In 2026, ‘clean label’ has become marketing shorthand for ‘we changed the label design.’ Many sauces that claim to be clean still contain thickeners, preservatives, and flavour enhancers — they just use plant-derived versions so they can legally say ‘natural ingredients.’ Xanthan gum is natural. Modified corn starch is natural. But do you want them in your condiment?
Tanjong Sauce® takes a different approach. Our ingredient list fits on the front of the bottle because there isn’t much to list: vinegar, sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, salt, and nutmeg. That’s seven ingredients. No parentheses. No ‘contains less than 2% of.’ No thickeners, no stabilisers, no MSG, no ‘natural flavours’ that are anything but natural.
The vinegar base is deliberate. Unlike soy-based sauces that rely on fermentation byproducts for body, a vinegar-based sauce gets its character from what’s actually in it — the chili, the garlic, the nutmeg. Nothing is hiding behind a wall of umami compounds designed in a lab.
This approach has practical benefits. No MSG means you’re not dealing with the post-meal thirst that hits after processed condiments. No gums or fillers means the sauce behaves differently than commercial brands — it separates slightly over time, which is actually a good sign. Real food separates. Factory food doesn’t.
When you read the back of a Tanjong Sauce® bottle, you know what you’re eating. That shouldn’t be remarkable. But in an industry where ‘clean’ usually means ‘slightly less processed,’ it unfortunately is.
