The Five-Ingredient Fried Rice That Beats Takeout Every Time
There is a moment in every home kitchen when fried rice sounds perfect, and the nearest takeout also sounds perfect, and the takeout wins because it is faster and you do not have to wash a pan. The secret nobody tells you: proper fried rice at home is faster than the delivery wait, cheaper than the delivery fee, and once you learn the rhythm, it is genuinely better.
This version needs five ingredients. Day-old rice, an egg, garlic powder, spring onions, and Tanjong Sauce®. That is the whole list. You can add chicken or shrimp if you have them, but the base does not need them to be excellent.

Start with a hot pan. Not medium, not medium-high. Hot enough that a drop of water dances across the surface. Add a little oil, pour in the beaten egg, and scramble it just until it sets, then push it to one side.
In goes the rice. Break up any clumps with the back of your spatula and let it sit untouched for a full minute so the grains get that light charred edge that takeout rice always seems to have. Sprinkle the garlic powder over the top, toss everything together, and add the spring onions at the very last minute so they stay bright.

Now the finishing move. Turn off the heat and add a few drops of Tanjong Sauce® directly onto the rice, tossing as you go. The vinegar base lifts the oil and salt, the chili powder brings gentle warmth, and the nutmeg leaves a quiet aromatic note that tastes like a stall in George Town, not like a bottle from a supermarket shelf.
That is it. Five ingredients, one pan, under ten minutes. The takeout will still be in the delivery rider’s bag.
