The Surprising Condiment That Diabetes-Friendly Diets Actually Allow

Lifestyle & Positioning Article

Managing diabetes means paying attention to everything you eat, including condiments. The good news: hot sauce is generally one of the better choices.

Low Sugar, Low Carbohydrate

The biggest concern for diabetics with any condiment is hidden sugar. Many commercial sauces, especially ketchup and sweet chili sauces, are loaded with added sugar. A tablespoon of sweet chili sauce can contain 7-8 grams of sugar.

Most vinegar-based hot sauces contain negligible sugar and carbohydrates. Tanjong Sauce® contains a small amount of sugar as part of its balanced recipe, but at normal serving sizes of a few drops or a teaspoon, the per-serving sugar content is minimal.

Capsaicin and Blood Sugar

Some research suggests capsaicin, the compound that makes chili peppers hot, may improve insulin sensitivity. A 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that capsaicin consumption helped moderate post-meal blood sugar spikes. More research is needed, but the early findings are promising.

What to Avoid

If you have diabetes, avoid hot sauces with added sugar, corn syrup, or fruit purees. Check the ingredient label. The shorter the list, the better. Tanjong Sauce® uses only eight ingredients: vinegar, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, ginger powder, nutmeg powder, sugar, and salt. Nothing artificial. No hidden sweeteners.

The Bottom Line

Hot sauce can be a flavourful, diabetes-friendly condiment when chosen carefully. Look for clean labels, minimal sugar, and real ingredients. A few drops can make a healthy meal taste great without compromising blood sugar management.
