A New Year, An Old Recipe: The 1970s Family Legacy Behind Tanjong Sauce®

Heritage & Penang Identity Article

New Year’s Day is for looking forward — but sometimes the most meaningful path ahead begins by looking back. As we turn the calendar to 2026, we want to share the story of how Tanjong Sauce® came to be. It is a story that began nearly fifty years ago, in a Penang family kitchen.

A Recipe Rediscovered

In the 1970s, a family in Penang developed a chili sauce recipe unlike anything available in stores. It was thinner than the thick sambals common in Malaysian kitchens. It was brighter — a vivid orange-red from pure chili powder, not artificial coloring. And it had a secret: nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), Penang’s own spice, lending a warm, sweet-spicy aromatic that no other sauce possessed.

The recipe was passed down through family gatherings, scribbled on worn notebook pages, demonstrated over steaming woks during festive seasons. But like so many family recipes, it came close to fading into memory. The generation that created it grew older. The younger generation moved away. The sauce that had defined countless family meals was at risk of being lost forever.

Protecting a Flavor Legacy

The decision to revive this recipe was not a commercial one at first. It was personal. It was about preserving a taste that carried memories — of reunions, of celebrations, of ordinary weeknight dinners made extraordinary by a single drizzle of sauce. The original recipe had only eight ingredients: vinegar, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, ginger powder, nutmeg powder, sugar, and salt. No turmeric. No MSG. No artificial anything. The purity of that formula was worth protecting.

Today, that recipe lives in every 100ml clear glass bottle of Tanjong Sauce®. The silver screw cap, the gold foil neck wrap, the shield-shaped vintage label with its cream and deep brown illustration — each detail honors the heritage it carries. Produced in small batches in Simpang Ampat, Penang, under MeSTI Food Safety and JAKIM Halal certification, the sauce has grown beyond a family kitchen without losing its soul.

Bringing Penang Into the New Year

As we step into 2026, our mission is unchanged: to share this rediscovered recipe with the world. Every bottle is an invitation — to taste the sweet start, the savory umami depth, the gentle clean heat at 2,000-3,000 SHU, and the lingering nutmeg finish that has defined this sauce for nearly five decades.

“A Piece of Penang in Every Drop.” That is not just our tagline. It is our promise. For RM 12.90, you are not just buying a sauce. You are becoming part of a family legacy that spans generations.

Happy New Year. Here is to old recipes and new beginnings.
