Understanding Tanjong Sauce Ingredients: What Is Inside Every Bottle

At Tanjong Sauce®, we believe you deserve to know exactly what is in your food. Here is a transparent, ingredient-by-ingredient breakdown of what goes into every bottle of our signature hot sauce.

The Full Ingredient List

Tanjong Sauce® contains just eight simple ingredients: vinegar, chili, garlic, onion, ginger, nutmeg, sugar, and salt. That is it. No MSG. No turmeric. No artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives. Every ingredient is chosen for a reason.

Vinegar: The Tangy Backbone

Vinegar provides the sharp, tangy base that balances the heat of chili. It also acts as a natural preservative, giving the sauce its shelf stability without artificial additives. We use only halal-certified vinegar in our Halal JAKIM certified product.

Chili: The Heat

Fresh chili is the heart of any hot sauce, and we source ours carefully for the right balance of heat and fruitiness. Our chili brings warmth without overwhelming the other flavours – a sauce you can enjoy generously, not just in cautious drops.

Garlic and Onion: The Aromatic Foundation

Garlic and onion form the savoury backbone that gives Tanjong Sauce® its depth. Fresh garlic delivers pungent, earthy notes, while onion adds a subtle sweetness and body. Together, they create a rounded, satisfying flavour profile.

Ginger: The Zesty Kick

Fresh ginger adds a bright, zesty warmth that cuts through the richness. It is a distinctly Asian touch that sets Tanjong Sauce® apart from Western-style hot sauces that often skip this ingredient.

Nutmeg: The Penang Signature

Here is what makes Tanjong Sauce® truly unique. Nutmeg adds a warm, slightly sweet, aromatic note that you will not find in any other Malaysian hot sauce. It is a nod to Penang’s spice trade heritage, giving the sauce a distinctive character and complexity.

Sugar and Salt: The Balancers

Sugar tames the heat and rounds out the acidity, while salt enhances every other flavour. Used in careful proportion, they bring harmony without dominating.

What We Leave Out

Many commercial hot sauces rely on MSG for a quick flavour boost and turmeric for colour. We use neither. Our sauce gets its colour naturally from fresh chili, and its depth from real ingredients, slow-blended in small batches in Penang. No shortcuts, just honest cooking.
