Tanjong is an old Malay word for cape – the point of land that pushes out into the sea, where ships turn and sailors navigate by. Long before George Town had its English name, the settlement at the northeastern tip of Penang Island was called Tanjung Penaga, after the ironwood trees that grew on the point.
The name never really left. It survives in the street names, in the old maps, in the way Penang people still refer to the tip of the island. And now it sits on a bottle of hot sauce.
Why a Hot Sauce Carries a Cape’s Name
Because the cape is where Penang’s story starts. In 1786, Francis Light landed there and planted the flag that would become George Town. Fort Cornwallis rose on the point. A lighthouse followed, then a ferry that connected the island to the mainland, and eventually a port that made this small island one of the busiest trading crossroads in the region.
Everything Penang is famous for – the spice trade, the hawker food, the mix of cultures – arrived through that cape. Nutmeg came the same way, planted as a cash crop for export and adopted so completely that Balik Pulau still grows it two centuries later.
